St John's Homework

Q:  The arrival of Aunt Alexandra has a negative impact on the Finch household, in Scout's view.

Second Year - To Kill a Mockingbird

Aunt Alexandra
Aunt Alexandra is a relic of the old South. She holds firm to out-dated beliefs about being a Southern lady. She represents a class of people who were subtly racist and who wanted to keep the classes separate. Harper Lee uses Aunt Alex to expose what is wrong with the Southern gentility. She believes that by dressing well, using manners, and being social, she is a true lady. But Aunt Alex cannot stand up for what is right; she cannot go against old notions. In the novel, it is Scout who becomes the true lady. Scout stands up for what is right and is true to herself and her values.

To Kill A Mockingbird - Test Post

Heck Tate - Ch. 10

As sheriff of Maycomb County, Heck Tate’s official role is maintaining law and order. Through most of the book, however, he seems about as powerful as Ranger Smith faced with Yogi Bear and a missing picnic basket. When the mad dog turns up on Scout’s street, Tate hands the gun to Atticus rather than risking sending a stray bullet into the Radley house with his own shot.
